In the 38th over of Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh in the ICC World Cup 2023, Angelo Mathews was out before he faced a ball.
In match No. 38 of the ICC World Cup 2023 between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka on Monday, veteran hitter Angelo Mathews was dismissed without facing a ball, making history for all the wrong reasons. After Bangladesh appealed for a timed-out, Mathews was furious with himself when match umpire Marais Erasmus declared him out. At the One-Day International (ODI) World Cup, the Sri Lankan all-rounder set an unwelcome record by being the first batter to be timed out.
It's interesting to note that in men's international cricket, Mathews is the first hitter to end this uncommon dismissal. After Sadeera Samarawickrama was removed from the game in the twenty-fourth over, the batsman from Sri Lanka went to bat against Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of Bangladesh. Shakib and company successfully appealed for a timed-out when Mathews made the schoolboy mistake of arriving at the crease wearing the incorrect helmet.

"Timed-out" At the World Cup, Mathews sets an unwanted record.
The hitter must be prepared to face the ball within two minutes following a previous retirement or dismissal, according to the laws. As the Sri Lankan batsman argued that he was late to face the first ball because his helmet's strap had broken, Mathews attempted to make his case to Shakib. Shakib, however, declined to rescind the appeal, and Mathews was given the order to march in Delhi. Because Mathews was not prepared to face the first ball of his inning within the allotted time, he was given out by timed out.
Have there ever been any time-out dismissals before?
Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Russell Arnold commented on-air, "This is the first time I have ever witnessed something like this," as Mathews' timed-out dismissal prompted a heated discussion on social media. In international cricket, this is the first timed-out dismissal ever. In first-class cricket, however, there have been multiple instances of hitters being timed out. When flooded roads prevented Andrew Jordaan from arriving in time for the 1987–88 Eastern Province vs. Transvaal match, he was given out. Hemulal Yadav was substituted because the batter was unable to get to the crease in time, as revealed in an open discussion with the team manager. The event took place during the 1997–98 season during Tripura's match versus Odisha.
