The 2022 Asia Cup was the 15th iteration of the Asia Cup cricket competition. The matches were played as Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) in the United Arab Emirates in the months of August and September 2022. The tournament was originally scheduled to take place in September 2020, but was postponed because to the COVID-19 pandemic in July 2020.. Before being postponed once more, it was then scheduled to occur in June 2021 in Sri Lanka. After securing the privilege to host the 2022 edition, Pakistan was set to host the competition. But the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced in October 2021 that Sri Lanka will host the event in 2022, while Pakistan would host the 2023 edition. In this edition, India, the defending champions, lost in the Super Four round. On July 21, 2022, Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by a score of 23 runs in the final to win their first T20I title and sixth overall. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) informed the ACC that they would be unable to host the event owing to the unrest in the nation's economy and politics. The competition, which will take held in the United Arab Emirates with Sri Lanka Cricket serving as the host nation, was confirmed by the ACC on July 27, 2022. The tournament's schedule was made public on August 2, 2022. Sri-Lanka was the winner of the Tournament with their sixth title in hand. image source- www.google.com
Bit of a background of the Tournament
In December 2018, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was given permission by the Asian Cricket Council to host the competition (ACC). It is not yet known whether the games will take place in Pakistan or the United Arab Emirates. Following the announcement, the PCB was asked to change the event's site due to continued security concerns by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In 2008 during the Asia Cup, Pakistan last hosted a multi-team international competition. Only a few international games have been played in Pakistan after the 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan national cricket team. " According to Sourav Ganguly, president of the BCCI, "Both India and Pakistan will participate in the Asia Cup." The PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani denied Ganguly's assertion the following day and asserted that the site had not yet been chosen. The ACC's initial meeting, scheduled for March 3, 2020, was postponed until the end of the month because to the COVID-19 pandemic in order to discuss the tournament's location. Mani stated that the contest would happen on March 7 at a neutral location. The next month, he admitted that the pandemic might make the competition impossible to hold. The qualifying competition was postponed until July 2020. The Asia Cup was postponed until 2023, according to the ACC, which announced that there will be no competition in 2021. Ramiz Raja announced in October 2021 that Pakistan would host the subsequent tournament in 2023, with Sri Lanka hosting the 2022 edition, following a meeting with the ACC. A qualification tournament was conducted in August 2022. The SLC Secretary Mohan de Silva declared on July 17, 2022, that the event will take place in the United Arab Emirates due to the country's economic problems and widespread unrest.
