The Indian men's cricket team defeated Australia by 44 runs in the second round of the five-match T20 series on Sunday at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. India scored 235/4 in 20 overs before limiting Australia to 191/9. India's total was the fifth-highest in T20 cricket history. The victory also gave India a 2-0 lead in the series, having won the preceding match by two wickets in Visakhapatnam.
Australia batted first, and Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (53 off 25) took the attack to the Australian bowlers, helping India reach 50 in 3.5 overs. While Ruturaj Gaikwad (58 off 43) played second fiddle at the other end, Jaiswal drove India's total to 77 runs inside the powerplay before being caught out in the sixth over by Nathan Ellis.
Ishan Kishan came in with one out and was cautious at the start of his inning. Soon after India reached 100 in 9.5 overs, the southpaw shifted gears, finishing his innings on 52 off 32 balls, with 164 runs on the board for India in 15.2 overs.
With less than five overs remaining and eight wickets in hand, incoming hitters Suryakumar Yadav (19 off 10) and Rinku Singh (31 not out off 9) demonstrated tremendous big-hitting prowess to lift the score to 235/4 in 20 overs. Nathan Ellis was Australia's best bowler, bowling four overs for 3/45.
Australia scored 11 runs in Arshdeep Singh's first over before destroying Prasidh Krishna for 20 runs in his second over. With the Australian openers struggling against the speed, Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav used leg-spin through Ravi Bishnoi in the third over, which resulted in the wicket of Matthew Short (19 off 10) on the fifth over.
