IPL 2025 Retentions Player List: With the IPL teams focusing on the players they wish to retain before the massive auctions, the player retention deadline is drawing nearer. It will be a challenge to go through their present rosters, which they have painstakingly assembled over the years, and choose those they believe will continue to play important parts in their title dreams, as the teams are only permitted to keep a small number of their best players.
The IPL governing council revealed the player rules for 2025–2027 more than a month ago. Following in-depth talks with the teams, the BCCI gave them the freedom to retain as many as six players at their discretion, either through retentions or the Right to Match (RTM) card. A maximum of two uncapped players and five capped players, both Indian and foreign, are permitted among these six retentions/RTMs.
Day of the IPL Retention Deadline
The IPL 2025 Retentions list must be shortlisted by October 31st for all ten clubs, including the Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants.
Purse of the IPL 2025 Auction
With the higher auction prize, each team may now invest Rs 120 crore to bolster their roster. Match fees, incremental performance pay, and the auction purse are all included in the wage ceiling. The whole salary ceiling (auction proceeds plus additional performance pay) was Rs 110 crore in 2024. In 2025, 2026, and 2027, it has been raised to Rs 146 crore, Rs 151 crore, and Rs 157 crore, respectively, as part of the IPL 2025 Retentions policy changes.
A major rule that was implemented in advance of the most recent mega auction states that an Indian player who has been capped will lose their cap if, within the five calendar years prior to the relevant season, they have not been included in the playing XI for international cricket (Test match, ODI, or T20O) or have not signed a Central Contract with the BCCI. However, this only applies to players who are Indian.
KL Rahul - Lucknow Super Giants
At the 2022 mega auction, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) paid Rs 18 crore to recruit the batsman-wicketkeeper. He led the team to the playoffs twice while serving as captain for three seasons.
But according to a number of press sources, the team will not be keeping Rahul and would instead favor younger players like Mayank Yadav, Ayush Badoni, and Ravi Bishnoi.
Shreyas Iyer, of the Kolkata Knight Riders
With 351 runs in 14 innings, Shreyas Iyer helped the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) win the 2024 Indian Premier League. But in the upcoming season, he can still find himself playing for a different squad.
However, his recent mediocre batting performance may influence the team's choice.
Furthermore, Phil Salt, Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, and Mitchell Starc are all international alternatives for KKR that may be higher on the hierarchy than Shreyas. Securing berths for younger Indian players like Rinku Singh and Harshit Rana may be KKR's top priority.
Delhi Capitals player Rishabh Pant
The Delhi Capitals' decision to maintain Rishabh Pant, who has played for the team since the beginning of his IPL career, sounds reasonable, but there have been rumors that the batsman-wicketkeeper is moving to other teams.
The Delhi batter, M.S. Dhoni, is reaching the end of his career, and the Chennai Super Kings, five-time winners, are the top contenders to recruit him. For the renowned skipper, Pant would be the perfect substitute.
Pant's possible admission is also open since clubs like LSG and KKR would be prepared to spend a lot of money looking for an Indian skipper.
Pat Cummins of the Hyderabad Sunrisers
Pat Cummins's leadership was essential to Sunrisers Hyderabad's incredible comeback, which sent the team to the IPL 2024 final.
The Australian international might not be directly retained, though, as Sunrisers Hyderabad could prefer to keep Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen, their other two foreign players. With their high-octane style of play, the pair helped SRH achieve the greatest team total in tournament history.
To get Cummins back into the lineup, SRH may decide to use one of its RTMs (Right to Match) as Indian players like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Abhishek Sharma are also in the running.
